Finished Measurements & Gauge

Full width: 64” (163 cm). Maximum height: 25” (64 cm). Gauge: 8 knit stitches = 2”.

Materials

650 yards (594 m) DK self-striping yarn; US 8 (5 mm) 40” circular knitting needle; 2 stitch markers; 1 removable stitch marker or progress keeper; tapestry needle. Samples use Noro Geshi in 09 Ibara (pink) and 03 Akiruno (blue).

Abbreviations

K: Knit. S1P: Slip 1 purlwise. YO: Yarn over. K2T: Knit 2 together.

PM: Place marker. SM: Slip marker. RS: Right side. WS: Wrong side.

M1L: With the left needle, pick up the bar between the stitch just worked and the next stitch from front to back. Knit into the back of the lifted bar.

M1R: With the left needle, pick up the bar between the stitch just worked and the next stitch from back to front. Knit into the front of the lifted bar.

Cast On

Cast on 3 stitches.

Cast-on repeat row: S1P, bring the yarn to the back, K2. Work this row 12 times total.

For the final cast-on row: S1P, K2; rotate the work 90° clockwise, pick up and knit 6 stitches along the edge; rotate the work 90° clockwise again, pick up and knit 2 stitches from the cast-on edge. 11 stitches are now on the needle.

Set-Up Row — Wrong Side

S1P, bring the yarn to the back, K4, PM, K1, PM, K5. (11 stitches.) Turn the work and attach the removable marker to the fabric to identify the right side.

Increase Rows

RS increase row: S1P, bring the yarn to the back, M1L, knit to the marker, SM, K1, SM, knit until 1 stitch remains, M1R, K1. (2 stitches increased.)

WS increase row: S1P, bring the yarn to the back, knit to the marker, M1L, SM, K1, SM, M1R, knit the remaining stitches. (2 stitches increased.)

Alternate the RS and WS increase rows until you would like to place your first yarn-over row.

Yarn-Over Row — Right Side Only

First half: S1P, bring the yarn to the back, M1L, K3. Repeat (YO, K2T, K2) until you cannot complete another full repeat before the first marker. Complete any partial repeat using the instructions below.

Partial repeats:
1 stitch remaining: K1.
2 stitches remaining: YO, K2T.
3 stitches remaining: YO, K2T, K1.

Center: SM, K1, SM.

Second half: K1. Repeat (YO, K2T, K2) until you cannot complete another full repeat, excluding the final stitch of the row. Complete any partial repeat using the same instructions above, still excluding that final stitch. M1R, then knit the last stitch.

After every yarn-over row, work a WS increase row. Add as many yarn-over rows as you like on the right side. When the yarn-over section is complete, return to alternating the RS and WS increase rows.

Cast Off

When enough yarn remains to knit approximately 3 more rows, loosely cast off all stitches.
