Bulky Mittens

Note – as mentioned in the video this pattern is written for one mitten. For 2AAT each step in
this pattern must be completed on the first and second mitten.
Materials (Video Time 1:53)
• US 10 (6 mm) 40” Circular Knitting Needles
• US 10.5 (6.5 mm) 40” Circular Knitting Needles
• 2 stitch markers
• Tapestry needle
• Waste yarn to hold thumb stitches
Yarn: 100 yards (91 m) of bulky weight yarn (#5)
• Premier Yarns Serenity in Amethyst (DN600-16)
• Onyx Fiber Arts Bulky in Wild Laurel
Gauge: 6 sts x 9 rows = 2” x 2”
Finished Measurements
• Across Palm: 4” (10 cm)
• Length: 8.75” (22 cm)
Abbreviations
• K2T: Knit two together
• SSK: Slip, slip, knit
• M1L: Make one left – pick up the bar in between the stitch that was just worked and the
one about to be worked with the left needle from front to back, then knit into the back
of the stitch
• M1R: Make one right – pick up the bar in between the stitch that was just worked and
the one about to be worked with the left needle from back to front, then knit into the
front of the stitch
• PM: Place a stitch marker
Cast On (Video Time 4:54)
Cast on 24 stitches to the smaller needle size and join in the round
Ribbing
Work Knit 1, Purl 1 ribbing for 1.5” (3.8 cm)
Increase Needle Size (Video Time 21:15)
Knit 1 round while increasing to the larger needle size

Thumb Increases (Video Time 23:58)
Set-Up Round 1: M1L, PM, Knit across round
Set-Up Round 2: Knit 1 Round
Increase Round Repeats:
Increase Round 1: M1L, knit until the stitch marker, M1R, slip the stitch marker, knit
across round
Increase Round 2: Knit
Increase Round 3: Knit
Repeat the thumb Increase Rounds 1-3 a total of 4 times. There should now be 9
stitches before the stitch marker.
Place the 9 thumb stitches on waste yarn. (Video Time 27:16)
Re-join in the round and continue knitting the mitten until it measures 7.5” (19 cm) from the
cast on edge.
Decrease Round (written for magic loop):
First Side: Knit 1, SSK, knit until 3 stitches remain, K2T, Knit 1
Second Side: Knit 1, SSK, knit until 3 stitches remain, K2T, Knit 1
Repeat the decrease round until 12 stitches total remain for each mitten (6 stitches on
each needle).
Use a kitchener stitch bind off to close the top of the mitten.
Thumb (Video Time 29:37)
With the larger needle size pick up the thumb stitches being held on waste yarn.
Knit 1 round, picking up one additional stitch where the thumb joins the mitten.
Continue knitting the 10 stitches until the thumb measures 1.5” (3.8 cm).
Thumb Decrease Round: K2T across the round (5 stitches remain)
Break the yarn and use the tapestry needle to thread the tail trough the remaining
stitches.
Weave in the ends and enjoy!
