Sizes, Materials & Gauge

Small (Medium) [Large] fit 7” (7.5”) [8”] foot circumference, or 18 (19) [20] cm. These sizes differ by 0.5”, rather than the 1” steps used in some other sock patterns.

200–400 yards (183–366 m) fingering yarn; US 0 (2 mm) or US 1 (2.25 mm) circular needle at least 40” long; 2 stitch markers; tapestry needle; ruler; scissors.

Gauge: 18 stitches × 25 rounds = 2” × 2” in stockinette in the round.

Abbreviations

MDS (make a double stitch): On a wrong-side purl row, slip one stitch to the right needle, pull the working yarn up over the right needle, then bring it between the needles to the front. On a right-side knit row, bring the yarn to the front, slip one stitch to the right needle, then pull the yarn up and over the needle to the back.

KFB: Knit into the front of the stitch, leave it on the left needle, knit into its back, and slip it off (1 stitch increased).

Cast On & Toe

Use Judy’s magic cast-on for 28 (32) [36] stitches, with 14 (16) [18] on each needle. Knit 1 round.

Increase round A: On each needle, knit 1, KFB, knit until 2 stitches remain, KFB, knit 1.

Round B: Knit.

Alternate A and B until 22 (24) [26] stitches remain on each needle, or 44 (48) [52] total. Then work A followed by 2 knit rounds repeatedly until 32 (34) [36] stitches are on each needle, or 64 (68) [72] total. If using a contrast toe, cut that yarn leaving an 8” (20 cm) tail and join the foot color.

Foot

Knit until the total sock length is 1.5” (2”) [2”], or 4 (5) [5] cm, shorter than the desired length. If using a contrast heel, set the main yarn aside without cutting and join the heel color.

Rejoin in the Round

If the heel and leg are the same color: MDS, knit the remaining stitches, rejoin in the round, and knit across the second needle.

For a contrast heel: cut the heel yarn leaving an 8” (20 cm) tail. Pass the double stitch from right to left needle, then knit it together with the leg color. Make a double stitch by bringing the heel-color tail to the front and up over the left needle to the back; knit the new double stitch together with the leg color. Knit the rest of the needle, rejoin in the round, and knit the second needle.

Leg, Cuff & Cast Off

Knit until the leg is 2” (5 cm) shorter than desired. If using a contrast cuff, cut the leg color leaving an 8” (20 cm) tail and join the cuff color.

Repeat (knit 1, purl 1) around for 2” (5 cm). Bind off using a stretchy method such as Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off.
