Round Sock Toe

In this video tutorial, I show step-by-step how to knit a rounded sock toe! This top-down sock toe method can be applied to any stitch count, and will work for magic loop or double-pointed needles!

Rather than dividing the sock into two halves and decreasing on either end, this method splits the sock up into 6 sections and decreases evenly throughout them all. As an added bonus - there is NO KITCHENER STITCH required when you knit a rounded sock toe!

Length & Gauge

The length of the toe will depend on the number of sock stitches. Below are example row counts based on starting stitch counts that can be used as references to compare with a row gauge.

64 stitches = 21 rows
68 stitches = 23 rows
72 stitches = 24 rows

Materials & Gauge

You will need stitch markers (4 for magic loop or 6 for double-pointed needles), scissors, and a tapestry needle. Toe length depends on the starting stitch count: the source gives 21 rounds for 64 stitches, 23 for 68, and 24 for 72. Compare these with your row gauge.

SSK: Slip 2 stitches individually knitwise, return them to the left needle, and knit them together through the back loops. K2T: Knit 2 together.

Set-Up Decrease Round

Divide the total stitch count by 6. If it is evenly divisible by 6, skip this round.

If the remainder is 2, SSK, knit across the first half, SSK, knit across the remaining stitches.

If the remainder is 4, SSK, knit until 2 stitches remain before halfway, K2T, SSK, knit until 2 stitches remain, K2T.

Set Up Stitch Markers

Divide the resulting total by 6. Call this number X. Knit one round, placing a marker every X stitches. For example, with 72 stitches, place a marker every 12 stitches.

Decrease Repeats

Decrease round: Knit until 2 stitches before the first marker, SSK. Knit until 2 stitches before the second marker, K2T. Knit until 2 stitches before halfway (the third marker on double-pointed needles), K2T. Repeat these three steps on the second half. Six stitches are decreased.

Work the decrease round followed by 2 knit rounds, 5 times total (15 rounds). Then work a decrease round followed by 1 knit round until 3 stitches remain between each pair of markers. Work the decrease round twice more; 1 stitch should remain between each pair of markers.

Finish

Cut the yarn, leaving a 12” (30.5 cm) tail. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches with the tapestry needle, bring it to the inside, tie a knot to secure, and weave in the end.
