Free Knitting Pattern
Sizes & Gauge
Small (Medium) [Large], to fit a 7” (8”) [9”] foot circumference, or 18 (20) [23] cm. Numbers are given in this order.
Gauge: 12 stitches × 14 rows = 2” × 2” in leg ribbing.
Materials
US 6 (4 mm) 24” circular needle for magic loop or double-pointed needles; tapestry needle; ruler. Yardage for a medium sock in women’s size 7: DK yarn Color A 50 yd (46 m), Color B 135 yd (123 m); sock yarn Color C 165 yd (150 m), optional Color D 10 yd (9 m). Hold one DK strand and one sock-yarn strand together throughout.
Abbreviations
SSK: Slip 2 stitches one at a time as if to knit, return them to the left needle, then knit them together through the back loops. K2T: Knit 2 together. P2T: Purl 2 together. RS: Right side. WS: Wrong side.
Cast On & Cuff
Holding DK A and sock C together, cast on 36 (40) [44] stitches with a stretchy cast-on and join in the round.
Cuff round: Repeat (knit 2, purl 2). Work for 1” (2.5 cm).
Optional stripe: drop sock C, join sock D, and work 2 cuff rounds. Cut D and pick up C again. Continue cuff ribbing until the cuff measures 2” (5 cm).
Leg
Cut DK A and join DK B, holding it with sock C.
Leg round: Repeat (knit 1 through the back loop, purl 1). Work for 3” (7.6 cm), or the desired length.
Heel Flap
Cut DK B and join DK A, holding it with sock C. The heel flap and turn are worked flat on half the stitches.
RS: Repeat (knit 1 through the back loop, slip 1 purlwise with yarn in back) across the back half; turn.
WS: Purl until 1 stitch remains, slip the last stitch purlwise with yarn in back; turn.
Repeat these two rows 9 (10) [11] times total, for 18 (20) [22] rows.
Heel Turn
Row 1: Knit 11 (12) [13], SSK, knit 1; turn.
Row 2: Slip 1 purlwise, purl 5, P2T, purl 1; turn.
Row 3: Slip 1 purlwise, knit 6, SSK, knit 1; turn.
Row 4: Slip 1 purlwise, purl 7, P2T, purl 1; turn.
Small: Row 5: slip 1 purlwise, knit 8, SSK, knit 1.
Medium: Row 5: slip 1 purlwise, knit 8, SSK, knit 1; turn. Row 6: slip 1 purlwise, purl 9, P2T, purl 1; turn. Row 7: slip 1 purlwise, knit 10, SSK.
Large: Work medium rows 5 and 6, then row 7: slip 1 purlwise, knit 10, SSK, knit 1.
Cut DK A and join DK B, holding it with sock C.
Pick Up Stitches & Heel Decreases
Resume working in the round. Pick up and knit along the left side of the heel flap, then pick up the bar at its bottom corner and knit into the back loop. Work in pattern across the front. Pick up the bar at the other bottom corner and knit into its back loop, then pick up and knit along the right side of the heel flap.
Begin with knit 1, K2T for small and large; begin with K2T for medium.
Decrease round 1: Knit until 3 stitches remain before the patterned side, K2T, knit 1; work in pattern across the top, knit 1, SSK, knit the remaining stitches.
Decrease round 2: Knit to the patterned portion, work the top in pattern, then knit the remaining stitches.
Alternate rounds 1 and 2 until 36 (40) [44] stitches remain, with 18 (20) [22] on each half. Continue in pattern until the sock is 2” (5 cm) shorter than the desired length.
Toe & Finishing
Cut DK B and join DK A, holding it with sock C. Knit 1 round.
Toe decrease round: On each half, knit 1, SSK, knit until 3 stitches remain, K2T, knit 1.
Work a decrease round, knit 2 rounds, work a decrease round, knit 1 round, work a decrease round, knit 1 round. Then work a decrease round every round until 16 stitches remain in total, 8 on each needle. Graft with Kitchener stitch and repeat for the second sock.
Kitchener Stitch
Set up: Thread the tapestry needle purlwise through the first stitch on the front needle, leaving it on the needle. Thread the tapestry needle knitwise through the first stitch on the back needle, leaving it on the needle.
Repeat these four steps until the stitches have been grafted: (1) thread knitwise through the first front stitch and slide it off; (2) thread purlwise through the new first front stitch and leave it on; (3) thread purlwise through the first back stitch and slide it off; (4) thread knitwise through the new first back stitch and leave it on.
