Free Knitting Pattern

Sizes, Materials & Gauge

Size A (preemie/newborn), B (0–3 months), C (3+ months). Counts are written A (B) [C]. Toe-to-heel measurements: 2¾” (3½”) [4½”], or 7 (8.9) [11.4] cm.

US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needle at least 24” long; stitch marker; tapestry needle; scissors. Use 25 (35) [65] yards of worsted yarn for the single-strand version, or that amount of each of two DK yarns held together for the double-strand version. Gauge: 5 stitches × 6 rounds = 1” × 1” in stockinette in the round.

Abbreviations

SSK: Slip 2 stitches one at a time as if to knit, return them to the left needle, then knit them together through the back loops. K2T: Knit 2 together. P2T: Purl 2 together. RS: Right side. WS: Wrong side.

Cast On & Cuff

Cast on 16 (20) [24] stitches and join in the round. Purl 1 round, knit 1 round, purl 1 round.

One color: Knit 9 (11) [13] rounds.

Contrasting cuff, heel and toe: With the cuff color, knit 3 rounds. Break the cuff color, join the main color, and knit 6 (8) [10] rounds.

Heel Flap

For the contrast version, break the main color and join the heel color. The heel flap and turn are worked flat.

Heel flap row: Slip 1 purlwise, knit 7 (9) [11], turn. Work this row 8 (10) [12] times total.

Heel Turn

Size A: Knit 4, SSK, knit 1; turn. Slip 1 purlwise, purl 1, P2T, purl 1; turn. Slip 1 purlwise, knit 2, SSK; do not turn.

Size B: Knit 5, SSK, knit 1; turn. Slip 1 purlwise, purl 1, P2T, purl 1; turn. Slip 1 purlwise, knit 2, SSK, knit 1; do not turn.

Size C: Knit 6, SSK, knit 1; turn. Slip 1 purlwise, purl 1, P2T, purl 1; turn. Slip 1 purlwise, knit 2, SSK, knit 1; turn. Slip 1 purlwise, purl 3, P2T, purl 1; turn. Slip 1 purlwise, knit 4, SSK; do not turn.

Pick Up Stitches

For the contrast version, break the heel color and join the main color. Turn the work clockwise 90°, pick up and knit 4 (5) [6] loops down the heel flap, and pick up and knit 1 stitch at the bottom corner. Turn and knit the 8 (10) [12] front stitches. Pick up and knit 1 stitch from the other corner, then pick up and knit 4 (5) [6] loops along the other side of the heel flap. The rest is worked in the round.

Heel Decreases: Size A

Round 1: P2T, purl 5, P2T, purl 1, knit 8 front stitches, place marker, purl 1, P2T, purl 2.

Round 2: Knit.

Round 3: Purl 5, P2T, purl 1, knit 8 front stitches, slip marker, purl 1, P2T, purl 1.

Round 4: Knit.

Round 5: Purl 4, P2T, purl 1, knit 8 front stitches, slip marker, purl 1, P2T. 16 stitches remain.

Heel Decreases: Size B

Round 1: Purl 1, P2T, purl 7, P2T, purl 1, knit 10 front stitches, place marker, purl 1, P2T, purl 3.

Round 2: Knit.

Round 3: Purl 8, P2T, purl 1, knit 10 front stitches, slip marker, purl 1, P2T, purl 2.

Round 4: Knit.

Round 5: Purl 7, P2T, purl 1, knit 10 front stitches, slip marker, purl 1, P2T, purl 1.

Round 6: Knit.

Round 7: Purl 6, P2T, purl 1, knit 10 front stitches, slip marker, purl 1, P2T. 20 stitches remain.

Heel Decreases: Size C

Round 1: P2T, purl 9, P2T, purl 1, knit 12 front stitches, place marker, purl 1, P2T, purl 4.

Round 2: Knit.

Round 3: Purl 9, P2T, purl 1, knit 12 front stitches, slip marker, purl 1, P2T, purl 3.

Round 4: Knit.

Round 5: Purl 8, P2T, purl 1, knit 12 front stitches, slip marker, purl 1, P2T, purl 2.

Round 6: Knit.

Round 7: Purl 7, P2T, purl 1, knit 12 front stitches, slip marker, purl 1, P2T, purl 1. 24 stitches remain.

Foot

Round 1: Knit.

Round 2: Purl 6 (8) [9], knit 8 (10) [12] front stitches, slip marker, purl 2 (2) [3].

Repeat these two rounds 2 (4) [6] times total. Add repeats here for a longer foot.

Note: The original PDFs omit the large-size front-stitch number in Foot Round 2; 12 is shown here to match the 12 front stitches and 24-stitch total.

Toe Decreases

For the contrast version, break the main color and join the toe color.

Round 1: Knit.

Round 2: Purl 3 (5) [6], P2T, purl 1, purl 1, P2T, purl 2 (4) [6], P2T, purl 1; remove the marker and shift the final 2 (2) [3] stitches to the beginning of the next round.

Round 3: Purl 1, P2T, knit 10 (14) [18].

Round 4: Purl 1, P2T, purl 0 (2) [4], P2T, purl 1, purl 1, P2T, purl 0 (2) [4], P2T, purl 1.

Size A: stop here and graft the remaining 8 stitches.

Sizes B and C: knit round 5. Round 6: purl 1, P2T, purl (0) [2], P2T, purl 1, purl 1, P2T, purl (0) [2], P2T, purl 1. Graft the remaining (8) [12] stitches.

Kitchener Stitch

Set up: Thread the tapestry needle purlwise through the first stitch on the front needle, leaving it on the needle. Thread the tapestry needle knitwise through the first stitch on the back needle, leaving it on the needle.

Repeat these four steps until the stitches have been grafted: (1) thread knitwise through the first front stitch and slide it off; (2) thread purlwise through the new first front stitch and leave it on; (3) thread purlwise through the first back stitch and slide it off; (4) thread knitwise through the new first back stitch and leave it on.
