Written Pattern

The original PDF pattern remains available above. This table runner is written for a 12 in (30.5 cm) width; calculate the length for your table before you begin.

Finished Size and Length Calculation

Width: 12 in (30.5 cm).

Inches: Table length (an average 60 in table works well) x 0.85, subtract 12 in, then divide by 2. The result is your Calculated Value in inches.

Centimeters: Table length x 0.85, subtract 30 cm, then divide by 2. The result is your Calculated Value in centimeters.

Materials

Gauge

7.5 stitches x 13 rows = 2 x 2 in (5 x 5 cm) in garter stitch after blocking.

Abbreviation

SSK: Slip two stitches one at a time as if to knit, return them to the left needle, and knit them together through the back loops.

Cast On

Using waste yarn, work a provisional cast-on of 44 stitches.

First Half

  1. Row 1: Knit.

  2. Repeat Row: Slip the first stitch purlwise with yarn in front, then knit across.

Work the Repeat Row until the piece measures your Calculated Value from the cast-on edge. Check the cast-on edge to make sure all 44 stitches are available on the opposite side.

Decrease

Place a marker at the side where decreases are worked.

  1. Decrease Row 1: Slip 1 purlwise with yarn in front, SSK, knit until 3 stitches remain, K2T, knit 1.

  2. Decrease Row 2: Slip 1 purlwise with yarn in front, knit across.

Repeat Decrease Rows 1 and 2 until 4 stitches remain after Decrease Row 1. Cast off the remaining 4 stitches.

Second Half

  1. Return to the provisional cast-on edge and pick up the second side. Count 44 stitches, then remove the waste yarn.

  2. Knit 1 row.

  3. Work the Repeat Row until this half matches the first half.

  4. Work the two Decrease Rows and cast off as for the first half.

Finishing

Weave in ends and block the runner to the calculated length. Use blocking mats, pins, and a drying rack or another flat surface as needed.

For optional pom-poms, make one with a 2.7 in (6.8 cm) maker for each end and sew them on securely using the cast-off tails.
