Denim and Knit Pillow
This pattern is written for pillow forms measuring 12 (14, 16) [18] in, or 30.5 (35.6, 40.6) [45.7] cm. The finished pillow is based on the pillow-form size.
Materials
Big Twist Anti Pill yarn, super bulky #6, held double: 175 (225, 275) [325] yds / 160 (205, 251) [297] m
US 15 (10 mm) circular needle with a 24 in cord or longer
Tapestry needle
Lightweight denim fabric
Gauge
4.5 stitches x 6 rows = 2 x 2 in in stockinette with yarn held double.
Cast On
Leave a 20 in (51 cm) tail for seaming. Holding the yarn double, cast on 54 (64, 72) [82] stitches.
Knitted Pillow Panel
Row 1: Purl 5, knit until 5 stitches remain, purl 5.
Row 2: Knit 5, purl until 5 stitches remain, knit 5.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 for 4 (4, 5) [5] in, ending after Row 1.
Initial Decrease
Row 1: K2T, knit 3, purl until 5 stitches remain, knit 3, SSK.
Row 2: Slip the first stitch purlwise, purl 3, knit until 4 stitches remain, purl 4.
Decrease Repeat
Row 1: Slip the first stitch purlwise, knit 2, SSK, purl until 5 stitches remain, K2T, knit 3.
Row 2: Slip the first stitch purlwise, purl 3, knit until 4 stitches remain, purl 4.
Repeat the decrease rows until the panel measures 11 (13, 15) [17] in, or 28 (33, 38) [43] cm.
Cast off all remaining stitches. Cut the yarn, leaving an 18 in (46 cm) tail for seaming.
Seaming
Fold the knitted panel along its centerline, with the center purl stitches on the outside.
Use the cast-off tail to seam the two sides together along the top edge.
Use the cast-on tails, one strand in each direction, to seam the bottom edge and partially up the side. Leave the diagonal sides open for the denim pillowcase.
Denim Pillowcase - Option 1
Sew the pillow completely from lightweight denim. Cut two squares measuring 12 (14, 16) [18] in along each edge. With right sides together, sew around the edges using a 1/2 in (1.2 cm) seam allowance, leaving an opening. Turn the pillowcase right side out, insert the pillow form, and sew the opening closed.
Denim Pillowcase - Option 2
For a two-fabric pillowcase, cut one denim square and one cotton square measuring 12.5 (14.5, 16.5) [18.5] in, or 31.8 (36.8, 41.9) [47] cm. Cut each square diagonally in half. Place one cotton triangle on one denim triangle, right sides together, and sew along the diagonal edge. Repeat for the second pair, unfold, then place the two sewn pieces right sides together with the denim portions aligned. Sew around the outside, leaving an opening on a cotton edge. Turn right side out, insert the pillow form, and sew the opening closed.
