Knit Mitten Ornament
In this step-by-step knitting tutorial, Madeline from Knitting House Square shows how to create an adorable knit mitten ornament! Each step is demonstrated including colorwork, thumb increases and placing thumb stitches on waste yarn, decreases, picking up stitches from waste yarn, and how to crochet a simple cord.

Worsted Weight Yarn
Color A: Big Twist Value in White 20 yds (18 m)
Color B: Red Heart Super Saver in Cherry Red: 1 yds (0.9 m)

Scissors
Ruler
US 8 (5mm) Circular Knitting Needle (24" or longer)
Optional: H (5 mm) Crochet Hook (to make cord to hang mitten from)
Finished Measurements: Finished Measurements: 4" Length x 3.25" Max
Width (10 cm x 8 cm) not including cord to hang from
Gauge: 4 sts x 6 rows = 1" x 1" stockinette in the round
Abbreviations
KFB (Slip 1 Purlwise - One Stitch Increase): knit the next stitch on the
left knitting needle, leave the stitch on the left knitting needle, knit into
the back of the same stitch, then slide the stitch off of the left knitting
needle
SSK (Slip, Slip, Knit - Left-Leaning Decrease): Slip 2 stitches individually
from the left to right needle as if to knit, pass the two stitches back over
to the left knitting needle, knit the two stitches together through the
back loop
K2T (Knit 2 Together - Right-Leaning Decrease): knit the next two
stitches on the left knitting needle together by inserting the knitting
needle into the front base going from left to right of both stitches at the
same time

CAST ON (VIDEO TIME 2:43)
Cast on 20 stitches using any cast-on method. Join in the round.
The sample knit in the video used the backward loop cast-on.
RIBBING REPEAT ROW
Ribbing Repeat Row: Knit 1, Purl 1, repeat between *'s across the round
Work the Ribbing Repeat Row a total of 3 times
COLORWORK (VIDEO TIME 07:57)
Knit 1 Round
Note for the next two rounds: Color A is the main mitten color and Color B is the contrast
color. Join Color B.
Colorwork Round 1: Knit 1 Color A, Knit 1 Color B, repeat between *'s across the
round
Colorwork Round 2: Knit 2 Color A, Knit 1 Color B, Knit 1 Color A, repeat between
*'s across the round
Cut Color B leaving a tail to weave in. The remainder of the mitten is knit using the
main mitten color (Color A)
THUMB INCREASES (VIDEO TIMES 12:13)
Thumb Round 1: KFB, knit across round
Thumb Round 2: KFB, KFB, knit across round
Thumb Round 3: Knit
Thumb Round 4: KFB, knit 2, KFB, knit across round
Thumb Round 5: Knit
Thumb Round 6: KFB, knit 4, KFB, knit across round
Thumb Round 7: Knit
Use a tapestry needle to slide the 8 thumb stitches off the knitting needles and onto
a piece of waste yarn.
RE-JOIN IN THE ROUND (VIDEO TIME 16:39)
Prepare to rejoin the remaining 19 mitten stitches in the round.
Cast on 1 stitch, then knit across the round.
Knit 6 additional rounds (7 rounds total).

DECREASES (VIDEO TIME 18:06)
Decrease Round 1: SSK, knit 6, K2T repeat between *'s on the second half of the
stitches
Decrease Round 2: SSK, Knit 4, K2T repeat between *'s on the second half of the
stitches
Decrease Round 3: SSK, Knit 2, K2T repeat between *'s on the second half of the
stitches
Decrease Round 4: SSK, K2T repeat between *'s on the second half of the stitches
Cut the yarn leaving an 8” (20 cm) tail and use the tapestry needle to thread the tail
through the remaining 4 stitches and off the knitting needles. Thread the tail to the
inside of the work.
THUMB (VIDEO TIME 21:50)
Pick up the 8 thumb stitches from the waste yarn, rejoin the yarn, and prepare to
work in the round.
Knit 4 rounds.
Decrease Round: K2T repeat across round
Cut the yarn leaving an 8” (20 cm) tail and use the tapestry needle to thread the tail
through the remaining 4 stitches and off the knitting needles. Thread the tail to the
inside of the work.
FINISHING
Weave in all ends except the tail from the cast-on edge.
Use the crochet hook and the cast-on tail to crochet a chain that is approximately 7”
(18 cm) long (Video Time 25:27). Loop the chain back to the mitten and use the
remaining yarn tail to secure it in place.
