Free Knitting Pattern
This quick cable hat is worked in the round using magic loop and super bulky yarn.
Yarn, Materials & Gauge
Use 140 yards (128 m) of super bulky (#6) yarn, shown in Wool in the Gang Crazy Sexy Wool in Glow Up Cream. The optional pom-pom needs approximately 20 g extra.
US 17 (12 mm) circular needle with a cord at least 40 inches long; cable needle; tapestry needle; scissors; optional 8.6 cm pom-pom maker.
Gauge: 4 stitches × 5 rows = 2 × 2 inches in ribbing in the round. Length: 10 inches (25.4 cm). For fit adjustments, change the number of purl stitches between cables as demonstrated at video time 30:33.
Abbreviations
C4: Slip 2 stitches to a cable needle and hold in front; knit 2 from the left needle, then knit the 2 held stitches.
C2: Slip 1 stitch to a cable needle and hold in front; knit 1 from the left needle, then knit the held stitch.
P2T: Purl 2 together. K2T: Knit 2 together. SSK: Slip 2 stitches individually knitwise, return them to the left needle, and knit them together through the back loops.
Cast On & Ribbing
Using backward loop, cast on 36 stitches and join in the round for magic loop. (Video 3:26)
Ribbing Round: Repeat (knit 1, purl 1) around. Work this round 4 times.
Cable Set-Up
Work 2 rounds of (knit 4, purl 2) repeated around. (Video 15:26)
Cable Repeat
Round 1: Repeat (C4, purl 2) around.
Round 2: Repeat (knit 4, purl 2) around.
Round 3: Repeat (knit 4, purl 2) around.
Round 4: Repeat (knit 4, purl 2) around.
Work Rounds 1–4 4 times in total. Work Round 1 once more.
Crown Decreases
Decrease Round 1: Repeat (knit 4, P2T) around. (Video 20:43)
Decrease Round 2: Repeat (SSK, knit 2, purl 1) around.
Decrease Round 3: Repeat (knit 1, K2T, purl 1) around.
Final Cable Round
Repeat (C2, purl 1) around. (Video 25:11)
Finishing
Cut the yarn, leaving an 18-inch (46 cm) tail. Thread the tapestry needle with the tail. Starting with the next stitch you would work, transfer each remaining stitch off the knitting needles and onto the tail. Draw the tail tight, pass it to the inside, and secure it. Weave in the ends. Optional Pom-Pom
Make a pom-pom and attach it securely. Use a thinner, strong yarn such as worsted weight to tie the pom-pom rather than the super bulky project yarn.
