Seamless Knit Hair Scrunchies

• 50 to 70 yds (46 to 64 m) fingering weight yarn

Free Knitting Pattern

Knit a tube around a hair elastic, then graft the live stitches to the provisional cast-on for a seamless finish.

Yarn & Materials

Use 50–70 yards (46–64 m) of fingering weight (#1) yarn. The PDF samples use Hue Loco Phyllis Sock and Shibui Pebble.

US 2 (2.75 mm) 24-inch circular needle; one US 2 or smaller double-pointed needle; waste yarn; tapestry needle; hair elastic.

Provisional Cast-On

Using waste yarn, provisionally cast on 22 stitches. Turn and knit across the cast-on stitches with the project yarn. (Video 2:42)

Join for Magic Loop

Divide the stitches and prepare to join in the round using magic loop. Place the hair elastic onto the front needle and move it all the way to the left, where the stitches on the front needle meet those on the back needle. (Video 8:21)

Knit every round, continually moving the elastic to the left each time you turn the work. Continue until the scrunchie has your desired fullness.

Cut the yarn, leaving an 18-inch tail.

Pick Up the Provisional Stitches

Using the double-pointed needle, pick up the cast-on stitches from the waste yarn. Use Kitchener stitch to graft the two sets of live stitches together. (Video 12:08)

Kitchener Stitch Set-Up

Thread the tapestry needle with the yarn tail.

Set-Up 1: Pass the tapestry needle purlwise through the first stitch on the front needle; leave that stitch on the knitting needle.

Set-Up 2: Pass the tapestry needle knitwise through the first stitch on the back needle; leave that stitch on the knitting needle.

Kitchener Stitch Repeat

Step 1: Pass the tapestry needle knitwise through the first stitch on the front needle; slide that stitch off.

Step 2: Pass the tapestry needle purlwise through the new first stitch on the front needle; leave it on.

Step 3: Pass the tapestry needle purlwise through the first stitch on the back needle; slide that stitch off.

Step 4: Pass the tapestry needle knitwise through the new first stitch on the back needle; leave it on.

Repeat Steps 1–4 to graft the stitches together. Secure the yarn and weave in the ends.
