Yarn & Materials
Chunky weight yarn (#5): Color A — 70 yards (64 m), including the pom-pom, shown in Echoview Recycled Yarn Collective in Slate Gray. Color B — 85 yards (78 m), shown in Creamy White.
US 9 (5.5 mm) 16-inch circular needle; US 10.5 (6.5 mm) 16-inch circular needle; US 10.5 double-pointed needles for the crown; 10 removable stitch markers; tapestry needle; scissors; optional pom-pom.
Cast On
With Color A, leave a 2-yard (1.8 m) tail. Using the US 9 needle and the long-tail cast-on, cast on 80 stitches. Place a marker and join in the round. (Video 4:52)
Ribbing
Ribbing Round: (Knit 2, purl 2); repeat around. (Video 9:45)
Repeat until the ribbing measures 4.5 inches (11.5 cm) from the cast-on edge.
Change Color & Needle Size
Break Color A, leaving a 10-inch (25 cm) tail. Join Color B and use the US 10.5 circular needle to knit the stitches from the smaller needle. (Video 12:32)
Hat Body
Knit every round until the center portion of the hat measures 5.5 inches (14 cm), measured above the ribbing.
Crown Decreases
Set up markers: (Knit 8, place a marker); repeat around to divide the 80 stitches into 10 sections. (Video 14:22 and 21:18)
Decrease Round: Knit to 2 stitches before a marker, knit 2 together (K2T); repeat around. Each decrease round removes 10 stitches.
Knit Round: Knit every stitch.
Alternate a Decrease Round and a Knit Round until 40 stitches remain.
Switch to the US 10.5 double-pointed needles when the stitches no longer fit comfortably around the circular needle. (Video 17:12)
Work 2 additional Decrease Rounds, leaving 20 stitches. Work 1 more Decrease Round, removing the markers as you go, leaving 10 stitches.
Close the Crown
Cut the yarn, leaving a 10-inch (25 cm) tail. Thread the tail through the 10 remaining stitches with a tapestry needle, then remove the knitting needles.
Pull the tail tight to close the crown, thread it to the inside, and secure it.
Fold & Sew the Brim
Turn the hat inside out and fold the ribbed brim in half. Hold it in place with removable stitch markers so it does not twist while you sew. (Video 24:00)
Using the tapestry needle and the cast-on tail, sew the cast-on edge to the inside of the hat where the ribbing meets the stockinette body.
Weave in all ends and add the optional pom-pom.
