Beanie - Knit Flat!
In this video I show step-by-step how to knit a beanie. This is a great tutorial for beginner knitters because this beanie is knit flat! You do not need to know how to knit in the round or use double pointed needles! I take you though each of the steps, from the cast on, to the cast off.

Pom-pom takes approximately 10 g of worsted weight yarn
Yarn Used: Worsted Weight (Weight #4)

Gauge: 9.5 stitches x 13.5 stitches = 2” x 2” in stockinette knit flat (knit 1 row, purl 1 row) using the larger knitting needle size

Free Knitting Pattern
This beanie is worked flat in ribbing and stockinette, then seamed. Instructions are given in the order Newborn (Toddler) [Adult Small/Teen] {Adult Medium}.
Sizes & Yarn
Newborn: Fits 13–15 inches (33–38 cm); 65 yards (60 m).
Toddler: Fits 18–19 inches (46–48 cm); 100 yards (91 m).
Adult Small/Teen: Fits 20–21 inches (51–53 cm); 125 yards (114 m).
Adult Medium: Fits 22–23 inches (56–58 cm); 175 yards (160 m).
Use worsted weight (#4) yarn. Yardages exclude the optional pom-pom, which takes approximately 10 g extra.
Materials & Gauge
US 6 (4 mm) and US 7 (4.5 mm) straight or circular needles used flat; 6 markers; tapestry needle; ruler; scissors; optional 6.8 cm pom-pom maker.
Gauge: 9.5 stitches × 13.5 rows = 2 × 2 inches in stockinette worked flat on the larger needles. K2T: Knit 2 together.
Cast On
With the smaller needles, cast on 62 (72) [82] {92} stitches using a stretchy cast-on. The video shows backward loop; long-tail or German twisted cast-on also works. (Video 5:54)
Ribbing
Ribbing Repeat Row: Repeat (knit 1, purl 1) across the row.
Repeat for 1 (1.5) [1.5] {1.5} inches, or 2.5 (3.8) [3.8] {3.8} cm. (Video 11:48)
Stockinette Center
Knit 1 row, changing to the larger needles. Purl 1 row. (Video 18:11)
Center Row 1: Knit.
Center Row 2: Purl.
Continue alternating these rows for 2.5 (3) [4] {4.5} inches, or 6.4 (7.6) [10.2] {11.4} cm. Finish after a purl row.
Decrease Set-Up
Set-Up Row 1: Knit 1, place a marker. Repeat (knit 10 (12) [14] {16}, K2T, place a marker) 5 times. Knit 1. (Video 20:48)
Set-Up Row 2: Purl.
Decrease Repeat Rows
Row 1: Knit 1, slip the marker. Repeat (knit to 2 stitches before the next marker, K2T, slip the marker) 5 times. Knit 1.
Row 2: Purl.
Repeat until 5 (6) [7] {8} stitches remain between each pair of markers. Finish after Row 2.
Final Decrease Row
Newborn and Adult Small/Teen: Knit 1, remove the marker. Repeat (knit 1, then work K2T repeatedly to the next marker; remove the marker) 5 times. Knit 1.
Toddler and Adult Medium: Knit 1, remove the marker. Repeat (work K2T repeatedly to the next marker; remove the marker) 5 times. Knit 1.
Close the Crown
Cut the yarn, leaving a 12-inch (30.5 cm) tail. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches with the tapestry needle, starting at the opposite end of the row from the yarn tail. Slide the stitches off the needle and draw the tail tight to close the crown. (Video 25:57)
Seaming
Cut approximately 30 inches (76 cm) of yarn. Use it to sew the side edges together with mattress stitch. Weave in the ends. Add the optional pom-pom. (Video 29:12)
