2-Color Brioche Mittens
In this video I show step-by-step how to knit pair of 2-color brioche mittens. These mittens are knit in the round using the magic loop technique. The cuff is knit using Knit 1, Purl 1 ribbing, then the brioche is introduced and worked up through the thumb increases and the rest of the mitten.
Note: This pattern is currently available in 1 size for DK/Light Worsted weight yarn - I hope to add more sizes and weights in the future!

• Color B (Brioche Main Color): Hedgehog Fibers DK in Birthday Cake Loop Yarn
• US 4 (3.5 mm) 32” or longer circular knitting needle Amazon
• 1 Stitch marker Amazon
• Tapestry needle Amazon
• Scissors
Gauge: 14 sts x 16 rows = 2” x 2” Ribbing in the round (after washing and placing flat to dry)

Brioche Mittens

Materials (Video Time 2:22)
• Tapestry Needle
• 1 Stitch Marker
• 1 Piece of waste yarn
• US 4 (3.5 mm) 32” or longer circular knitting needle
Yarn
• Comparable Yarns: DK or Light Worsted that recommend between a US 6 – 7 knitting
needle
• Color A (Cuff and Brioche Background)
o 125 yds (114 m)
o Knit Picks High Desert in the Lupine Colorway
• Color B (Brioche Main Color)
o 95 yds (87 m)
o Hedgehog Fibers DK in Birthday Cake
Gauge: 10 stitches x 12 rounds = 2” x 2” brioche in the round
Tip: I count the “rows” for the gauge using the columns of knit stitches. So, for example there are
9 knit stitches in a 2” length of one of the columns of knit stitches.
Abbreviations
• BRP (Brioche Purl): purl the stitch and the yarn over together
• BRK (Brioche Knit): knit the stitch and the yarn over together
• BRK-YO-BRK (Brioche Knit, Yarn Over, Brioche Knit): knit the stitch and yarn over
together, keep the stitch on your left knitting needle, bring your yarn to the front, then
knit the stitch and the yarn over together again
• Left Leaning Decrease (Video Time 34:26): Slip the BRK as if to knit, knit the purl stitch
and the next BRK together, pass the slipped BRK up-over-and-off of the stitch that was
just knit
• Right Leaning Decrease (Video Time 36:10): Slip a BRK as if to knit, knit 1 (was
previously a purl stitch), pass the slipped BRK up-over-and-off the stitch that was just
knit, pass the knit stitch from the right to left needle, pass the next BRK stitch on the left
needle up-over-and-off the knit stitch, pass the knit stitch from the left to right needle
Cast-On (Video Time 4:45)
Using Color A cast-on 40 stitches using a stretchy cast-on method (I recommend the long
tail cast-on or the German twisted cast-on). Join in the round.
Ribbing
Ribbing Round: Knit 1, Purl 1, repeat between *’s across the round
Continue working the Ribbing Round in Color A for 2” (5 cm)

Note: We will now introduce brioche into our work. Each brioche round will be worked first in
Color B, then in Color A.

Join Color B
Brioche Set Up Round (Color B): knit 1, yarn front, slip 1 purlwise repeat between
*’s across the round, after the final slipped stitch create a yarn over (Video Time 14:37)
Brioche Set-Up Round (Color A): yarn front, slip 1 purlwise, yarn over, BRP repeat

Increase Round Set-Up:
Color B: BRK, yarn front, slip 1 purlwise, BRK-YO-BRK, place the stitch
marker, yarn front, slip 1 purlwise, BRK, yarn front, slip 1 purlwise, repeat
between *’s across the round, after the final slipped stitch create a yarn over

Color A: slip 1 purlwise, yarn over, BRP repeat between *’s across the round

*Note: the BRP that was created during the increase will just be a Purl,
not a full BRP
Work the Brioche Repeat Round two times (example: Color B, Color A, Color
B, Color A).
Increase Round Repeat:
Color B: BRK, yarn front, slip 1 purlwise repeat between *’s until 1 stitch
before the stitch marker, BRK-YO-BRK, slip the stitch marker, yarn front, slip 1
purlwise, BRK, yarn front, slip 1 purlwise, repeat between *’s across the round,
after the final slipped stitch create a yarn over

Work the Brioche Repeat Round two times (example: Color B, Color A, Color
B, Color A).
Work the Increase Round Repeat a total of 3 times.
Work just the Color B and Color A Increase Rounds one additional time (NOT the
Brioche Repeat Rounds). When complete you will have 13 stitches before the stitch
marker.
Place the Thumb Stitches on Waste Yarn (Video Time 30:40)
Using a tapestry needle place the first 12 thumb stitches onto the waste yarn. On the next
round the stitch marker can be removed.
Re-join in the round and continue working the Brioche Repeat Round until the brioche
portion of the mitten is a total length of 6” (15.2 cm).
RIGHT Mitten Increase Rounds
Increase Round Set-Up:
Color B: BRK, yarn front, slip 1 purlwise, repeat between *’s 9 times, place
the stitch marker, BRK-YO-BRK, yarn front, slip 1 purlwise, *BRK, yarn front,
slip 1 purlwise*, repeat between *’s across the round, after the final slipped stitch
create a yarn over
Color A: slip 1 purlwise, yarn over, BRP repeat between *’s across the round
*Note: the BRP that was created during the increase will just be a Purl,
not a full BRP
Increase Round Repeat:
Color B: BRK, yarn front, slip 1 purlwise, repeat until the stitch marker, slip
Brioche Repeat Rounds).

When complete you will have increased a total of 10 stitches.
Place the Thumb Stitches on Waste Yarn (Video Time 48:12)
Color B: BRK, yarn front, slip 1 purlwise until the stitch marker, remove the stitch
marker, BRK, use the tapestry needle to slip the next 12 stitches onto waste yarn, rejoin
in the round, yarn front, slip 1 purlwise, BRK, yarn front, slip 1 purlwise repeat
between *’s across the rest of the round.
Note: If you are working these mittens using magic loop the 12 stitches being placed on
the waste yarn will be 11 stitches from the front knitting needle, and one stitch from the
back knitting needle.
Continue working the Brioche Repeat Round (beginning with Color A) until the brioche
portion of the mitten is a total length of 6” (15.2 cm).
Decreases (Video Time 33:00)
Left Mitten ONLY: If working magic loop, before you begin the decreases slide one
stitch from the back knitting needle to the front knitting needle (on the left side, not at the
beginning of the round) so that you have 19 stitches on each knitting needle.
Decrease Round 1 (Color B): Left Leaning Decrease, yarn front, slip 1 purlwise, *BRK,
yarn front, slip 1 purlwise*, repeat between *’s 6 times, Right Leaning Decrease, yarn
front, slip 1 purlwise, Left Leaning Decrease, yarn front, slip 1 purlwise, *BRK, yarn
front, slip 1 purlwise*, repeat between *’s 5 times, Right Leaning Decrease, yarn front,
slip 1 purlwise, yarn over (4 stitches decreased)
Decrease Round 1 (Color A): slip 1 purlwise, yarn over, BRP repeat between *’s
across the round
Work the Brioche Repeat Round one time (example: color B, color A).
Decrease Round 2 (Color B): Left Leaning Decrease, yarn front, slip 1 purlwise, *BRK,
yarn front, slip 1 purlwise*, repeat between *’s 4 times, Right Leaning Decrease, yarn
front, slip 1 purlwise*, repeat between *’s 3 times, Right Leaning Decrease, yarn front,
Decrease Round 2 (Color A): slip 1 purlwise, yarn over, BRP repeat between *’s

Decrease Round 3 (Color A): slip 1 purlwise, yarn over, BRP repeat between *’s
across the round
Cast off the remaining 14 stitches using Kitchener stitch.
Thumb (Video Time 42:50)
Pick up the 12 thumb stitches from the waste yarn. Be sure to not miss any of the yarn
overs!
Re-join your yarns and beginning with Color B work the Brioche Repeat Round for 2”
(5 cm). Note where the thumb starts in the repeat: the Left Mitten begins with a BRK, the
Right Mitten begins with a yarn front, slip 1 purlwise.
Decrease Round (Color B) Left Mitten: *Left Leaning Decrease, yarn front, slip 1
purlwise*, repeat between *’s across the round
Decrease Round (Color B) Right Mitten: *yarn front, slip 1 purlwise, Left Leaning
Decrease*, repeat between *’s across the round
Cut your yarn and use the tapestry needle to thread the tail through the remaining stitches.
Use the yarn tails from joining the thumb to seam closed the thumb gusset hole (Video
Time 50:54).
Kitchener Stitch (Video Time 40:09)
Set-Up 1: Thread the tapestry needle purlwise through the first stitch on the front
needle, leave the stitch on the needle
Set-Up 2: Thread the tapestry needle knitwise through the first stitch on the back
Repeat Step 1: Thread the tapestry needle knitwise through the first stitch on the front
needle, slide the stitch off the needle
Repeat Step 2: Thread the tapestry needle purlwise through the new first stitch on the
front needle, keep the stitch on the needle
Repeat Step 3: Thread the tapestry needle purlwise through the first stitch on the back
Repeat Step 4: Thread the tapestry needle knitwise through the new first stitch on the
back needle, leave the stitch on the needle.
