Free Knitting Pattern
Sizes & Gauge
Small (Medium) [Large], to fit a 7” (8”) [9”] foot circumference, or 18 (20) [23] cm. Numbers throughout are given in this order.
Gauge: 8 stitches × 14 rounds = 2” × 2” in leg stockinette.
Materials
Approximately 250 yards (229 m) worsted (#4) yarn, based on a medium sock in women’s size 9; US 8 (5 mm) circular needle at least 24” long for magic loop, or double-pointed needles; tapestry needle; stitch marker; four buttons approximately 1” (2.5 cm) in diameter; optional Tulip puffy fabric paint. The sample uses Yarn Bee Forever Plush.
Abbreviations
SSK: Slip 2 stitches one at a time as if to knit, return them to the left needle, then knit them together through the back loops. K2T: Knit 2 together. P2T: Purl 2 together. RS: Right side. WS: Wrong side.
Cast On & Leg Ribbing
Cast on 32 (36) [40] stitches using a stretchy cast-on, such as long-tail or German twisted, and join in the round. If you are not using magic loop, place a beginning-of-round marker.
Ribbing round: Repeat (knit 2, purl 2) across the round. Work for 1.5” (3.8 cm).
Buttonholes
Cast off the last stitch of the previous round and the first stitch of the next round. Continue ribbing to the end of the round. Before turning for the next round, cast on 2 stitches. Turn and work the cast-on stitches into the ribbing: purl the first to end the round and knit the second to begin the next round. Once this first ribbing round is complete, move the second cast-on stitch back to the beginning of the round.
Work the ribbing round for 2” (5 cm), then repeat these steps for the second buttonhole. Work ribbing for another 1.5” (3.8 cm).
Leg & Heel Flap
Knit in the round for 5” (12.7 cm).
For the left sock, work the heel flap on the first half of the stitches. For the right sock, knit 16 (18) [20] first, then work the heel flap on the second half. This places the buttonholes on the outside of the finished pair. The heel flap and turn are worked flat.
RS: Repeat (slip 1 purlwise, knit 1) across 16 (18) [20] stitches; turn.
WS: Slip 1 purlwise, purl 15 (17) [19]; turn.
Repeat these two rows 8 (9) [10] times total, for 16 (18) [20] rows.
Heel Turn
Row 1: Knit 10 (11) [12], SSK, knit 1; turn.
Row 2: Slip 1 purlwise, purl 5, P2T, purl 1; turn.
Row 3: Slip 1 purlwise, knit 6, SSK, knit 1; turn.
Row 4: Slip 1 purlwise, purl 7, P2T, purl 1; turn.
Small: Row 5: slip 1 purlwise, knit 8, SSK.
Medium: Row 5: slip 1 purlwise, knit 8, SSK, knit 1.
Large: Row 5: slip 1 purlwise, knit 8, SSK, knit 1; turn. Row 6: slip 1 purlwise, purl 9, P2T, purl 1; turn. Row 7: slip 1 purlwise, knit 10, SSK.
Pick Up Heel Flap Stitches
The sock is worked in the round again. Pick up and knit along the left edge of the heel flap, then pick up the bar at the bottom of the heel and knit into the back loop for one additional stitch. Knit across the front of the sock. Pick up the bar at the other bottom corner and knit into its back loop, then pick up and knit along the other side of the heel flap.
Heel Decreases & Foot
For the first decrease round only, begin with K2T for small and large, or knit 1, K2T for medium.
Decrease round 1: Knit until 3 stitches remain before the top half, K2T, knit 1; knit across the top 16 (18) [20] stitches; knit 1, SSK, knit the remaining stitches.
Decrease round 2: Knit.
Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until 32 (36) [40] stitches remain, with 16 (18) [20] on each half. Knit until the sock is 2” (5 cm) shorter than the desired length.
Toe & Finishing
Decrease round: On each half, knit 1, SSK, knit until 3 stitches remain, K2T, knit 1.
Plain round: Knit.
Alternate these rounds until 8 (8) [10] stitches remain in total. Graft with Kitchener stitch. Make the second sock using the heel placement for the opposite foot. Attach the buttons and optionally decorate the soles with fabric paint.
Kitchener Stitch
Set up: Thread the tapestry needle purlwise through the first stitch on the front needle, leaving it on the needle. Thread the tapestry needle knitwise through the first stitch on the back needle, leaving it on the needle.
Repeat these four steps until the stitches have been grafted: (1) thread knitwise through the first front stitch and slide it off; (2) thread purlwise through the new first front stitch and leave it on; (3) thread purlwise through the first back stitch and slide it off; (4) thread knitwise through the new first back stitch and leave it on.
